The Lotus Elise, like the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86, is lightweight, meaning that it’s great to drive and with 45.0mpg it’s efficient – and it’s even mid-engined.

3 BMW 420D COUPE 60.1MPG

The BMW 3 Series saloon is good to drive, but the 4 Series Coupe, with its lower centre of gravity and wider track, just has the edge. For outright performance we’d choose the 435i, but if you want economy, the 420d is the one to go for.

4 BMW 330D TOURING 55.4MPG

A BMW estate? Really? Yes, if you want a driver’s car that can also transport the kids and the dog, and provide a rewarding driving experience and decent economy, there’s not much to touch the 330d Touring.

5 PORSCHE PANAMERA S E-HYBRID 91.1MPG

Okay, first of all, you’re not going to get 91.1mpg in real life. However if you have a regular commute of around 12 miles or less before being able to recharge the car, this Porsche really can be a zero emission electric car that can also turn back into a driver’s car when you hit the open road.

6 VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO 62.8MPG

It may be due for an update, but the Scirocco is still fun to drive and in 138bhp form it can return 62.8mpg – although we’d recommend opting for the 170bhp model.

7 AUDI TT COUPE 53.3MPG

The Audi TT has a classic design and it even offers the reassurance of four-wheel drive. The petrol-powered TT RS may be the most fun, but if you want to combine secure handling and economy then go for the 2.0 TDI quattro.

8 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTD 67.3MPG

The Golf GTD tries to do most things that the GTI does but also offers decent 67.3mpg economy – and it’s a Golf so it’s a sensible choice.

9 FORD FIESTA 1.0-LITRE ECOBOOST 65.7MPG

The Ford Fiesta ST may get all the attention, but the Fiesta 1.0-litre EcoBoost has similar handling and agility together with the promise of 65.7mpg from its three-cylinder engine.
